I can`t open ports

I've tried everything, read lots of pages, but it seems I can't open ports in my router. It's GEMBIRD NSW-R2. I've read the manual, followed all the instructions, but when I test the ports, it says they are closed. I use Ares to download movies, and I'd like to know what I can do to solve this problem. I've also looked into the firewall and everything seems all right. My OS is Win XP. The port indicated to download files in Ares is 17286. Everything is very slow, so I'd like to fix this. Can anyone help me, please? Huh
