You can use it to protect your blog or other webapp from being attacked by spammers. There was a PHP class you could use to access the service, but it was very buggy. So we wrote our own simple PHP function to access the Akismet service. It's very simple to use and very reliable.

You need to get a valid Key before you can use the service. And to get that, you need to sign up for a wordpress blog account. If you are new to akismet, you should check out their site first and get familiar with how their service works. If you are a current akismet user, and you get spam messages slipping through your script regularly, you might like this script. Just plug it in, in place of the old PHP class. Make a few slight modifications to your PHP code and you should be good to go.

New Feature: WhatsMyIP iPhone / iPod Touch WebApp!

Our Fios WEP key calculator WebApp was so popular, we went ahead and built a whole new WebApp containing all of our best tools. Point your iPhone to http://iphone.whatsmyip.org and you'll get super easy access to all of our best stuff. You can bookmark the WebApp right to your home screen too, because we drew up a nice touch-icon. Works on iPod Touches too, you just need to be connected to a wifi network.

Update: Whois & DNS Lookup Tool

We just made a minor update to the Whois & DNS lookup tool. The layout of the page is much more sane. It only has two search boxes instead of a whole bunch. Now you just choose the DNS record you want to look up in a menu, rather than using a different box for each one. And we also added more record types for you to search.

New Tool: Fios Default WEP Key Calculator

We just finished up a new tool on the site. It's a lookup tool for calculating the default WEP keys for Fios routers. You DID know that Fios WEP (and all WEP really) is very insecure? We also whipped up a little iPhone WebApp version of this tool. It's the site's first iPhone tool. It will help all the on-site technicians out there a lot. Add it to your home screen, we even made a nice little icon for it.

New Tool: HTTP Headers

We just added a new tool to the site. An HTTP Response Header lookup tool. You see, any time a browser grabs an object like a web page from a website, there are several lines of header information that get transferred before the document, or image, or whatever is being requested. This is data that you normally can not view in a web browser. You can access this data by sniffing ports, or using certain command line tools. Well now, you can just type the URL of an object into the HTTP Headers tool, and it instantly makes a request, and displays all headers. Enjoy.

Update: External Links

We've added a new section in our Navigation column called External Links. We did this to link to the speakeasy bandwidth test. This is not a paid link, we don't have any kind of deal with speakeasy. It is simply the best bandwidth test we know of on the internet. We don't have the resources ourselves to make a comparable bandwidth test. And we know that many of our visitors want a bandwidth test. So add it all up, and we've added an External Links category, and linked to the speakeasy test. We may add more useful links to this section in the future but DO NOT EMAIL US SUGGESTIONS, OR OFFERS OF LINK EXCHANGE. If you want to advertise on this website, you have two options. Use Google Adwords, or buy PixelAds. Space in the External Links section of this site are NOT FOR SALE. So enjoy the bandwidth test. It's not ours, we have nothing to do with it at all, we make no money if you use it, but it's our favorite bandwidth test on the internet.

New Tool: IP Location

We just added a new tool to the site. It's an IP Location tool. This tool lets you look up the approximate geographic location of an IP address, on a google map. It is fairly accurate down to the city, but it doesn't go to the street level. It can trick you because some IPs are located near the center of a city, which makes this tool look smarter than it is. But it is still a very interesting tool to play around with.

Update: More Info About You

We just updated our More Info tool. This tool tells you all sorts of information about you, and your network connection. It now shows you your approximate location on an embedded google map. The info displayed on the page has been organized into a few logical groups to make it easier to absorb. And we've added a few more bits of information too. Check it out.

New Service: OS Discs By Mail

We started a new service on WhatsMyIP.org

This means they all load their data in place, and give you, the users, a much more pleasant experience. No more forms that yank you up or down the page when you submit them.
